New media evangelism

I suppose I could trace the concrete manifestation of this fascination with the online world to my fourth year of study at Rhodes University, but it all started way before that.

During my first few years as a web user, I found my self awestruck at what I eventually figured out was the business of the web. Sure there’s a bunch of underlying technology(ies), but my interest was about creating content, drawing audiences, monetizing online communities. I was one of the lone students who could sit in some dark corner of the library, absorbed in a Wired magazine.

This is pretty much an introductory post, I’m busy migrating all my old posts from my (soon-to-be-defunct) personal blog. Also, I’m working on refining the purpose and anticipated tone/content of this blog. Primarily, it’ll be an outlet for my thoughts and observations on new media, especially in the South African/African context. There’ll also be the odd random posts about my life.

I’ve been tied up (together with one or two other colleagues) with the mammoth task of relaunching the www.moneyweb.co.za website. The site is growing at an incredible pace and recently, most of my attention has been there.

The posts will start coming (with some regularity) later this week. Thoughts, remarks and criticism about the new Sowetan website, user generated content and what seems to be a blind gold rush in blog services locally.

The future of music

A lot has been said about 2007 being the tipping point for DRM and the digital distribution of music. Gigaom has a great guest column by Raghav “Rags” Gupta.

Some thought-provoking stats:
More titles churned through Billboard’s tops spot last year than ever before.
From Big Champagne: over a billion files being traded on a monthly basis
The worldwide market for flash or hard-drive-based players was 140 million units in 2005.

Getting there…

Should be up and running by Monday.
